1-800-GOT-JUNK? AND UKROP’S PARTNER WITH LOCAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS TO RAISE FOOD FOR THE CENTRAL VIRGINIA FOODBANK
RICHMOND, VA – Feb. 5, 2007 - 1-800-GOT-JUNK? has partnered with Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc. for its Third Annual Hokies vs. Hoos for the Hungry “food fight,” using the rivalry between the Virginia Tech Hokies and the University of Virginia Hoos to stimulate donations to the Central Virginia Foodbank.
The “food fight” will take place at Ukrop’s 28 locations from Feb. 5–10, 2007, the week leading up to the Virginia Tech vs. UVA basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 10 in Blacksburg. Hokies and Hoos fans, along with CVFB supporters, can donate food in specially designed Hokies and Hoos collection boxes. Each can or box of food donated will count for 1 point, and every $1 donated to the Central Virginia Foodbank on its website, www.CVFB.org, for the “food fight” will count as 5 points. Daily scores showing who has donated the most will be posted in Ukrop’s locations and online at www.HokiesVsHoos.com.
On Friday, Feb. 9 at the Ukrop’s at Chesterfield Towne Center (11361 Midlothian Turnpike) at 10:30am, a press rally will take place and include representatives from both alumni associations, as well as the Central Virginia Foodbank, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and Ukrop’s. The rally will provide an opportunity to area media to speak with representatives from the various participating organizations to learn more about the food drive and encourage support by the participating schools, but more importantly for the Central Virginia Foodbank.
“Although Tech won the first two years, the third time’s a charm for UVA,” stated Matt Shaver, philanthropy chairman of the UVA Club of Richmond. “This year the Wahoos will win big,” Shaver promised.
Aaron McClung, president of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association of Richmond responded by saying, “Not so fast my friend. The Hokies will continue to win and show school spirit and overwhelming support for the Central Virginia Foodbank. Go Hokies!”
Once the holiday season is over food donations drop off significantly, so food drives like the “Hokies vs. Hoos” are greatly needed. Each day, up to 49,000 pounds of food is withdrawn by the 500 partner agencies that depend on the Foodbank to feed hungry children, seniors and the working poor. “Regardless of who wins the Hokies vs. Hoos food fight, the real winners will be the hungry people in our community,” stated Fay Lohr, CEO of the Central Virginia Foodbank.
