UVA BEATS VA TECH IN FOOD FIGHTTO BENEFIT THE CENTRAL VIRGINIA FOODBANK
RICHMOND, VA – Feb. 13, 2007 - Virginia Tech might have beaten UVA in basketball 8457 last weekend, but Cavalier fans did win an offcourt battle against their instate rival in the Third Annual
Hokies vs. Hoos for the Hungry “food f ight.”
The Final Score – Hoos 26,931 – Hokies 19,273
In a surge of donations over the last two days of the weeklong competition, Cavalier fans finished at 26,931 points or 7,658 points more than the Hokies’ 19,273 points. This is UVA’s f irst win in the three years of competition.
Proceeds from the food f ight benef it the Central Virginia Foodbank, which distributes 49,000 pounds of food daily to 500 partner agencies to feed hungry children, seniors and the working poor.
The “food f ight” took place at Ukrop’s 28 locations from Feb. 510, 2007, through specially designed Hokies and Hoos collection boxes. Each can or box of food donated counted for one point, and every $1 donated to the Central Virginia Foodbank on its website, www.CVFB.org, counted as five points. 1 800GOTJUNK? partnered with Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc. for the friendly competition.
“The real winners are the hungry people in our community,” said Fay Lohr, CEO of the Central Virginia Foodbank. “Whether you donated on behalf of UVA or Tech, we appreciate everyone’s
generosity. Last week’s food drive is making a difference, but our needs continue to grow as do those of the agencies and people we serve.”
