UKROP’S TO CLOSE GRACE STREET STORE
RICHMOND, Va. – April 14 , 2008 – Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc. today announced it would close its store at 500 North Harrison Street effective 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2008.
Ukrop’s acquired the store at Grace and Harrison Streets in October 2003.
Ukrop’s President and Chief Executive Officer Bobby Ukrop, said, “We were both excited and somewhat anxious about Ukrop’s first opportunity to operate a retail grocery store in a ‘downtown’ environment. We made a sizeable investment to renovate the store and have attempted many different strategies during the past five years to grow the business. However, in spite of our best efforts, we have been continuing to operate this location at a significant deficit; doing so can longer be an option for us, especially in light of today’s economy.”
Ukrop’s notified its shoppers of the closing via personal letters last week. “We are grateful to those customers who have supported our store and will do our best to meet their needs at other nearby Ukrop’s,” Ukrop shared.
In order to ensure Ukrop’s pharmacy customers experience minimal disruption, particularly for those customers who are close to our store, the company has made arrangements with another retailer (approximately one mile away) to receive Grace Street customers’ prescriptions at the close of business on May 10, 2008.
As with all previous closings, all of our associates who have faithfully served our customers will be offered comparable positions at other Ukrop’s locations.
