“Protect Our Earth” Artwork by Richmond Fifth Grader
featured on 1.8 MIllion Reusable Ukrop’s Paper Bags in April
Fairfield Court Elementary Student receives $100 savings bond, a class ice cream party, and $500 for school’s art department.
RICHMOND, Va. – April 21 , 2008 - Most children are pleased when their artwork ends up on their parent’s refrigerator, but one Richmond fifth grader has found his environmentally themed artwork on 1.8 million Ukrop’s reusable paper bags during the month of April.
Last fall, Morris Jennings Jr., a fifth grader at Fairfield Court Elementary School in the City of Richmond, submitted a three-color drawing of cupped hands holding the Earth with the headline “Protect Our Earth.” Jennings worked with his teachers John Salvaggio and Pam Fowler to submit his entry in the Second Annual Ukrop’s Grocery Bag Design Contest.
As part of its environmental awareness efforts, Ukrop’s was looking for one dynamic image to capture the importance of sustainability, recycling and environmental protection. The company selected April to print the winning artwork on its recyclable and reusable paper bags as a connection to Earth Day on April 22, 2008.
The art contest drew several hundred entries from elementary school students throughout the Richmond, Roanoke, Williamsburg and Fredericksburg areas. A panel of Ukrop’s associates served as judges. Selected student entries will be on display in Ukrop’s locations later this week.
