"Giving back to our Virginia communities is part of our longstanding commitment since my parents started Ukrop's with one store in 1937," said Ukrop's President and CEO Bobby Ukrop. "Golden Gift is a truly unique giving program because donations are made completely at the direction of Ukrop's Valued Customers. Golden Gift enables our customers to help organizations important to them and their families. I'm inspired by how involved our customers are with a wide range of community organizations."

How the program works
- Between Feb. 4 and March 29, customers with a valid Ukrop's Valued Customer Card earned one Golden Gift Point for every $1 spent. The more they shopped, the more points they earned. Ukrop's automatically calculated and tracked points on customers' purchase receipts.
- In May, customers received a Golden Gift Certificate via mail that detailed the number of points they accumulated during the earning period.
- Customers then submitted their Golden Gift Certificate to the non-profit organization of their choice.
- The more points a charity collected, the greater its share of the $400,000 payout.
- Representatives from the registered non-profit organizations had until June 14 to submit their certificates using envelopes provided by Ukrop's at one of its customer service counters.
Program background
Since the Golden Gift program started in 1987, Ukrop's has distributed more than $12 million to local non-profits. The program is one of the ways Ukrop's honors its pledge to give back at least 10 percent of its pre-tax profits to the communities it serves.

Today, it co-owns, with Markel Corporation, 25 First Market Bank branches in Ukrop's locations and 10 free-standing branches. In June 2008, Ukrop's launched another innovative loyalty program called fuelperks! which rewards Richmond-area customers by providing significant discounts on fuel based on Ukrop's grocery purchases. To date, Ukrop's fuelperks! rewards exceed $1.2 million dollars. www.ukrops.com
