At Ukrop’s, the tradition of quality began in 1937. Through the years, it has been our priority to offer the finest foods and the best value. On occasion that means procuring a brand new item that we call Ukrop’s Own. Not just anything gets our seal of approval; before a product becomes Ukrop’s Own, we make provisions to ensure that it meets our exact specifications.
Ukrop’s Own products are an elite few which prove to be of outstanding quality, freshness, and of course, taste. These products are produced specifically for Ukrop’s. We know their origin and every step those products take before reaching our stores. It’s our form of quality assurance, and if they weren’t the best, we wouldn’t put our name on them.

In 1991, we began our Ukrop’s Own Shrimp program to offer a high quality shrimp worthy of the Ukrop’s name. We sought to make available a shrimp of consistent quality, taste, firmness and freshness, without the use of chemicals, which our customers could count on every time. After learning as much as we could about shrimp, the varieties people enjoy most and where those shrimp are found, our Seafood Team closed the deal with an ideal partner. We’ve been offering Ukrop’s Own Shrimp in several varieties ever since. But we didn’t stop there. In our drive to offer the best, over time we have found the cream of the crop in other key areas: namely coffee, beef, various produce including tomatoes and peaches, and most recently, pork. When you want quality, look for the Ukrop’s Own seal. You’ve got our name on it.

Ukrop’s Own Coffee, brought to you in 1994
It’s hard to believe you can help people who live a world away just by sipping your morning coffee. But with Ukrop’s Own Gourmet Coffee, you can. Ukrop’s has joined in a business effort that not only guarantees quality beans for our full flavor coffee, but also sows the seeds of a better life for coffee growers-- providing meals, housing, medical supplies, schooling and much more to those who work and live on coffee farms.

A portion of the money from the sale of Ukrop’s Own Gourmet Coffee is funneled directly back to the coffee farmers in Central America and Africa. This program is called “Source Aid.” JBR Gourmet Foods, our partner and the company who buys the coffee from the farmers, develops direct relationships with the coffee farmers. Pete Rogers, Green Coffee Buyer, visits those coffee farms, or “fincas,” four months a year. His visits allow him not only to see the coffee crops first hand, but also to better get to know the communities and their needs. It’s not just business; it’s a relationship.

Since 1912, the Chiles family has been farming more than 250 acres in Crozet, Virginia. Talk about a family legacy: Henry Chiles’ father used to ship his prize apples to Queen Victoria! Today Henry and his son care for about 50,000 peach trees to bring us the Ukrop’s Own Peaches from Virginia. Delivered fresh to Ukrop’s each day during the season, the peaches are carefully packed inside plastic bins, which are steam-cleaned prior to filling.
The bins are then tagged to label information such as from which trees the peaches came, and even who picked them. Thanks to the meticulous care of Mr. Chiles, his son, and their fellow farmers, we have juicy, delicious Ukrop’s Own Peaches to enjoy year after year. Watch for them ear after year as the days get longer and summer settles in.

Ukrop’s Own Tomatoes
An old family friend of the Ukrops, Robert Dodd helped paint Joe Ukrop’s home many years ago. And the fruitful relationship has continued through the years: Overseeing 19 different farms with a total of about 400 acres, Mr. Dodd is most proud of his old-fashioned tomatoes, which he even cultivates the old-fashioned way—with a horse. This allows for less distance between each row, which means more tomatoes in the garden. And when the final product is Ukrop’s Own Tomatoes, we want as many as we can get!
Besides Ukrop’s Own Tomatoes, Mr. Dodd grows grape tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, strawberries and 14 varieties of peppers. All of his produce is washed, cooled and packed right at the farm. When in season, cucumbers, squash, and his prize tomatoes are delivered daily to Ukrop’s. Harvesting his crops as early as the season allows, Mr. Dodd had been providing Ukrop’s with his fresh produce for 35 years and counting.
