Answers to common Medicare Part D Questions
Here are a few quick questions and answers you may be looking for:
1. What is Medicare Part D?
Medicare Part D is the new prescription drug benefit offered by Medicare effective January 1, 2006. It will help reduce costs on generic and branded prescription costs.
2. Am I eligible to participate?
If you are currently receiving Medicare benefits, you are eligible. For answers to more questions, ask any Ukrop’s Pharmacist or you can visit Medicare’s Web Site www.medicare.gov.
3. Do I have to enroll to participate in the prescription drug savings?
Yes. Enrollment is voluntary and began on November 15, 2005. Please review the important dates section.
4. How do I receive Medicare Part D benefits?
There are several ways to receive Medicare Part D drug coverage. You can join a Medicare Part D drug plan, Medicare Advantage Plan or other Medicare plans that offer drug coverage. To enroll in a plan, call 1-800-MEDICARE or go to www.medicare.gov.
5. What will I have to pay?
You will have to pay a premium, which will vary depending on the plan you choose. You will also have to pay a yearly deductible and part of the cost of your prescriptions (including co-payment/co-insurance).
6. What will happen if I have limited income?
If you have limited income, you may qualify for additional help, which may include not having to pay a deductible or premium.
7. How do I choose a plan?
There are several Medicare prescription drug plans (PDP’s) being offered in Virginia. Each plan is different and offers a variety of different options, including which pharmacies you may go to and which drugs are covered. Ukrop’s accepts all plans that are currently offered in Virginia. Look at each plan carefully and be sure that the drugs you take are included on the formulary (a list of covered drugs) of the plan you choose. To help you choose a plan, visit Medicare’s “Prescription Drug Plan Finder” (www.medicare.gov/MPDPF/public)
8. What if I already have prescription drug coverage?
If you currently have drug coverage through any of the following:
- Medigap (supplement) policy
- private pension program or retiree group plan
- Medicare Advantage plan
Compare your current coverage to the coverage available through Medicare. Check to make sure your current plan will still be covering prescription drugs.
If you currently have drug coverage through Medicaid, you will have to enroll in Medicare Part D.
If you have prescription drug coverage through TRICARE, the Veterans Administration (VA), or FEHBP (federal employee retiree benefits), coverage should continue, but you may qualify for extra help through Medicare. You may want to contact your benefits administrator for coverage information.
If you have a Medicare-approved discount card, it will expire on May 15, 2006.
9. Can I change plans once I have enrolled?
Yes. Each year, you may change your plan during the open enrollment period from November 15 through December 31. Your new plan will become effective January 1 of the next year.
10. What drugs are not covered by Medicare Part D?
Diabetic testing supplies
Medications for anorexia, weight loss, and weight gain
Medications for fertility treatment
Medications for cosmetic purposes or hair growth
Medications for cough and cold
Prescription vitamins and minerals
Non-prescription drugs
Barbiturates
Benzodiazepines
Prescription drugs covered by Medicare Part A or Part B (Inpatient drugs)
