Wi-Fi Basics

What is Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is Ukrop's wireless (Wi-Fi) computer network. Wi-Fi computer networking technology allows computers and PDAs to send and receive Internet data via a wireless network. Several Ukrop's Cafes have installed IEEE 802.11 b and g Wireless Standard networks with “access points” you can use. If your computer is Wi-Fi enabled, grab a snack, make yourself comfortable and log on!

Is there an access fee?
No. Ukrop's provides this service free of charge to its customers. Customers must have their own equipment, wireless card, and software.

Is the network secure?
Ukrop's Wi-Fi access is as secure as any open public access network like public telephones and dial-up Internet accounts. It's always a good idea to make sure you are on an SSL-encrypted web page prior to sending or receiving confidential data.

Equipment

What equipment do I need to use Wi-Fi?
You will need a laptop computer or a personal digital assistant (PDA) equipped with a standard Internet browser and a Wi-Fi compliant (802.11 b or g) wireless Ethernet card.

Can I use a Mac to use Wi-Fi?
Yes. All you need is an 802.11 b or g compatible wireless card and the appropriate software installed.

Where can I get a Wi-Fi card?
Wireless network cards are available for purchase at most major electronics retailers.

Connecting

How do I connect to Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi operates on industry standard 802.11 b & g wireless protocols. Wi-Fi automatically advertises its availability and connects to your wireless capable laptop or PDA.

How do I configure my laptop or PDA?
The majority of 802.11 wireless devices have options for a network identifier (SSID) and encryption (often referred to as WEP). As Wi-Fi is a public network, the SSID should be automatically detected; or can be set by changing your SSID to “Wi-Fi”, “any”, or “ANY”. WEP settings should be disabled. You may need to reboot your computer.

Can I connect to my corporate VPN?
Wi-Fi allows Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections to many corporate networks.
